Amidst the ongoing crisis in West Asia, the Central Government has completely rejected the news of fuel shortage in the country. The government on Monday assured citizens that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or cooking gas (LPG) in the country. This statement comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday appealed to reduce fuel dependence and save money.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refinery), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said that due to the West Asia crisis, there has been a disruption in the global energy supply and fluctuations in prices are being seen in the international market. However, the Government of India has taken several effective steps to ensure fuel supply without any inconvenience to the common consumers.
Crude inventory sufficient, work continues in refineries
Sujata Sharma informed that India has sufficient reserves of crude oil. He said that our refineries are working at full capacity and there is no interruption.
There has been no report of stock out at any petrol pump or LPG distributorship in the country. Adequate stock of petrol and diesel is available and LPG is being continuously supplied to homes for cooking.
Delivery of 1.26 crore LPG cylinders in 3 days
Sharing the LPG supply figures, Sharma said that the distribution network across the country is functioning normally. In the last three days, cylinders were delivered to 1.26 crore homes against 1.14 crore LPG bookings.
Apart from this, more than 17,000 tonnes of commercial LPG was sold in the last three days. More than 762 tonnes of auto LPG was sold during the same period. More than 1,400 small (5 kg) cylinders were also sold in the last three days.
52 thousand consumers left LPG connection
Regarding gas supply and infrastructure, Sharma said that till now about 52,300 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections. Oil marketing companies (OMCs) organized 93 camps, in which more than 2,100 cylinders were sold.
At present, gas has been commissioned in 6.7 lakh PNG connections and initial infrastructure has been created for 2.68 lakh connections. More than 7.29 lakh new customers have registered for PNG.
76 distributors who broke the rules were suspended
The government has also shown strictness against black marketing of fuel and violation of rules. Nearly 1,500 raids and inspections have been conducted in the last three days. Based on this, oil companies have fined 382 distributors, while 76 distributors have been suspended.
Apart from this, since May 1, 4,600 tonnes of propylene and 1,700 tonnes of butyl acrylate have been sold to the petrochemical and pharma industry.
PM Modi’s appeal- reduce fuel use
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during an event in Telangana on Sunday, had suggested cautious use of petroleum products in view of the geopolitical situation in West Asia.
The PM had said that today the need of the hour is to use petrol, gas and diesel very sparingly. We should use imported petroleum products only as per requirement. This will not only save foreign exchange, but will also reduce the adverse effects of war.
India made progress in solar energy and ethanol
The Prime Minister had said that India has joined the leading countries of the world in solar energy production. Besides, necessary growth has also been achieved in ethanol blending in petrol.
The government is working on increasing LPG coverage, expanding piped gas supply and promoting CNG based systems. Due to these efforts, India is able to deal with the world’s major energy crisis.
Increase in use of metro and electric vehicles
The government has urged citizens to gradually reduce their dependence on traditional fuels. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma suggested that wherever possible, people should use metro and public transport.
Apart from this, priority should be given to carpooling, railways for freight transportation and electric vehicles for personal use so that the economic burden on the country can be reduced.
What is ethanol blending and PNG?
- Ethanol Blending: Mixing ethanol made from sugarcane or grains in petrol. This reduces the import of crude oil and also reduces pollution. India is rapidly moving towards the target of 20% blending.
- PNG: Piped natural gas, like cooking gas (LPG), does not come in a cylinder, but directly reaches the kitchen through pipes. It is considered safer and more economical than LPG.
