Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Kyiv during his landmark visit to Ukraine on Friday, marking the first trip by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine since 1991.

“Paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Kyiv. The ideals of Bapu are universal and give hope to millions. May we all follow the path he showed to humanity,” PM Modi said in a social media post on X.

Tributes to Gandhi

This tribute came shortly after he, along with President Zelenskyy, honoured the memory of children at the Martyrologist Exposition, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine.

PM Modi arrived in the Ukrainian capital after concluding his two-day trip to Poland during which he held wide-ranging talks with the Polish leadership. The prime minister travelled to Kyiv from Poland in a ‘Rail Force One’ train that took around 10 hours.

On October 2, 2020, during the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a bronze statue of Bapu was inaugurated in Kyiv, Ukraine. The statue was unveiled by then Indian Ambassador Partha Satpathy, along with senior Ukrainian officials.

The unveiling at A.V. Fomin Botanical Garden in Kyiv was part of the celebrations of Gandhi’s 151st birth anniversary. Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, led the non-violent resistance movement against British colonial rule, ultimately leading to India’s independence in 1947.
