With the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) hunting for allies after a hung mandate in Tamil Nadu, talks are swirling in Chennai about a possible alliance between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), sources told CNN-News18.
The speculations follow TVK Chief Vijay’s visit to state governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to stake a claim to form the government in Tamil Nadu.
Actor-turned-politician and TVK Chief Vijay — who marked a historic debut in the state assembly election — bagged 108 out of 234 seats. However, it fell short of the majority mark, which stands at 118.
The TVK had reached out to the Congress, VCK, and the Left parties, to fetch support to form a government in the state.
The Congress — which won five seats — extended support to the TVK. Despite the grand old party’s support, the TVK is in the need for five more seats to touch the majority mark.
The AIADMK ruled out extending support to the TVK, with the party’s Deputy Coordinator K.P. Munusamy saying, “Whatever the situation is, AIADMK will not support TVK”, according to news agency YEARS.
Governor ‘Not Convinced’ Of Vijay’s Number’s Game
Tamil Nadu governor Arlekar is not certain about the TVK’s number’s game, sources told CNN-News18after Vijay paid a visit to him at the Lok Bhavan on Wednesday.
During the meeting with the governor, Vijay submitted a detailed letter consisting of the signatures of 108 MLAs who backed him as their choice as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, sources said.
Launched just two years ago, the TVK made a historic debut by winning 108 seats in the state assembly election that was held in a single phase on April 23.
The DMK bagged 59 seats, AIADMK 47, PMK 4, IUML 2, CPI 2, CPI(M) 2, and the BJP, DMDK, and AMMK one seat each.
