After getting a historic mandate in Assam assembly elections, BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with the new Cabinet, will take oath as Assam’s chief minister for the second time in a row on May 12, three days after West Bengal’s new government’s swearing-in ceremony.
This will be the third time the BJP has come to power in Assam. On May 6, Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned from the position of the chief minister, as per the protocol.
Sarma handed over his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhavan, which marked the formal initiation of the process of government formation.
Sarma’s request was accepted by the governor, and he was requested to continue as the state’s caretaker Chief Minister till the new government assumes office.
As per the Chief Minister’s Office’s official statement, Sarma’s resignation, along with that of the Council of Ministers, was submitted to the governor after the formal notification of the election results for facilitating the formation of the new government.

According to the sources, the oath-taking ceremony will take place in Guwahati on May 12. Himanta Sarma has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the swearing-in ceremony of the new government.
Riding on a strong mandate, the BJP-led NDA has returned to power in Assam for a third straight term, consolidating its grip on the state. The BJP secured 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, comfortably surpassing the halfway mark.
The outcome underscores the alliance’s continued dominance in Assam, while dealing a blow to the opposition. Party leaders described the verdict as an endorsement of their governance record and development-focused policies.
