A catch created a big controversy in the Indian Premier League 2026 match played between Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This incident happened in the 8th over of the first innings, when Jason Holder took the catch of Rajat Patidar.
While trying to play a pull shot on Arshad Khan’s short ball, Patidar’s bat hit the top-edge and the ball went into the air. Running from deep backward square leg, Holder dived towards fine leg and took a brilliant catch with his left hand. During this time, Kagiso Rabada was also running towards the ball and a situation of conflict arose between the two.
At first glance it seemed that the catch was missed, because the ball was seen hitting the ground. Patidars also started returning towards the pavilion. However, the third umpire reviewed this decision. In the replays, the ball was definitely seen touching the ground, but it was controlled between the fingers of the holder.
Third umpire Abhijit Bhattacharya considered it a valid catch and declared Patidar out. The RCB camp did not like this decision. Virat looked very angry and was seen arguing with the fourth umpire. Team’s Director of Cricket Mo Bobat was also seen expressing disagreement with this decision. Shubman Gill was seen explaining to Devdutt Padikkal, who was present at the ground at that time, that Holder had taken the right catch.

MCC rules clarified the matter
According to Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) rule 33.2.2.1, if the ball is under the control of the fielder’s hands, a catch will be considered valid even if the hands touch the ground.
That is, in this case, even though the ball came in contact with the ground, the holder had complete control over it, hence the umpire’s decision was considered correct as per the rules.
Drama was seen in commentary also
The commentary on both Cricinfo and Cricbuzz described the catch as brilliant, but it was also acknowledged that the RCB players took issue with it considering it a ‘ground touch’. Especially Kohli’s reaction made this entire incident even more heated.
