Karnataka has directed schools to ban obscene songs at events, enforce modest attire, and promote value-based performances, warning of action against violations

The circular places direct responsibility on headmasters and school managements for the selection of songs, choreography and overall presentation during school functions.

The Karnataka School Education Department has instructed all government, aided and unaided schools across the state to prohibit students from performing songs deemed obscene during school programmes.

In a circular dated April 16, the department directed deputy directors (administration) to enforce the order rigorously. Authorities have also been asked to initiate action against school managements found violating the guidelines.

The directive makes it clear that institutions must exercise greater vigilance in monitoring cultural activities conducted on campus.

Dress Code And Performance Guidelines

According to a report in The Times Of Indiaalongside the ban on inappropriate music, schools have been instructed to ensure that students participating in events are dressed in modest attire.

Institutions have been advised to avoid songs considered vulgar or suggestive. Instead, they are encouraged to select music that is inspiring, rooted in values, and reflective of Indian culture. Songs promoting positive messaging, patriotism and cultural heritage have been specifically recommended.

According to the circular, exposure to such content may negatively influence mental well-being, discipline and moral development. It warned that inappropriate dances and songs could undermine the educational environment and lead to indiscipline, thereby affecting the sanctity of schooling.

Background: Complaint Prompted Action

The move follows a representation submitted earlier this year by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Swabhimani Bana, which raised concerns over the nature of songs and dance performances at certain school events.

Acting on these concerns, the department has now formalised guidelines aimed at ensuring that school programmes remain appropriate and aligned with educational and cultural values.
