US President Donald Trump is reportedly sending his Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner to Pakistan to take part in a second round of talks with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to two administration officials cited by CNN.
The development comes after Araghchi confirmed he will travel to Pakistanalong with Oman and Russia, as part of a regional tour focused on “bilateral matters”. However, he did not specifically confirm any direct talks with the United States, as negotiations between Tehran and Washington remain stalled.
CNN further reported that US Vice President JD Vance is not currently expected to attend the discussions. Officials said this is partly because Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, seen within the White House as a key counterpart in the Iranian delegation, is not taking part in this round.

However, Vance will remain on standby and could travel to Islamabad if the talks make progress. Members of his team are expected to be present in Pakistan and participate in the discussions, the report stated.
Vance had taken part in the first round of talks, which ended without a deal. He was also expected to attend the second round in Islamabad, and the White House had previously confirmed his likely participation last week.
Pakistan has emerged as the lead mediator in efforts to end the US-Iran war. However, following a marathon first session of talks on April 11, Tehran has so far declined to send a delegation to Islamabad for a second round.
US and Pakistani officials say logistics and security preparations are already in place in Islamabad, with American teams deployed in the capital ahead of the possible talks, a Pakistani official source told AFP.
Tensions remain high in the region, with Iran having restricted access through the Strait of Hormuz in response to the conflict, while the United States has imposed its own blockade measures on Iranian ports.
