The opposition is drafting a new notice to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The opposition is once again trying to remove Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. According to sources, leaders of many opposition parties are talking to each other.
Around five senior leaders are working on drafting a new notice so that the removal proceedings can be initiated. Earlier in March, the opposition had given notice in Parliament for the removal of Gyanesh Kumar.
However, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan rejected these notices. He said the charges leveled against Gyanesh Kumar do not meet the high constitutional standards required for his removal.
Opposition set a target of getting 200 signatures
In the new notice, the opposition is trying to garner the support of at least 200 MPs. The main reason for this is the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill recently passed in the Lok Sabha. The 131st amendment bill to the Constitution failed after voting in the Lok Sabha on Friday. 230 MPs voted against the bill.

According to the rules, signatures of 100 MPs are required.
The signatures of at least 100 MPs are required for a proposal to remove CEC in the Lok Sabha. For this, signatures of at least 50 MPs are required in Rajya Sabha.

Investigation committee only after the proposal is approved as per law
The Chief Election Commissioner can be removed in the same manner as a Supreme Court judge is removed. The recommendation of the Chief Election Commissioner is necessary for the removal of other Election Commissioners.
According to the Judges (Inquiry) Act 1968, if notice is given to both the Houses on the same day, the inquiry committee will be formed only when the motion is accepted by both the Houses. After this, the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman will together form a joint inquiry committee.
