Kerala Summer Vacation Rules: Government Bans Special Classes In Schools Amid Rising Temperature

Amid rising temperatures and ongoing heatwave conditions, the Kerala government has banned schools from conducting special classes during the summer break, warning of strict action against those who violate the rules.

Announcing the decision, General Education Minister V Sivankutty said that all schools must strictly follow the Kerala summer vacation schedule, which runs from the last working day of March till May. He made it clear that holding classes during this period will be treated as a violation of the Kerala Education Rules.

The move comes as the state faces intense Kerala heatwave conditions, with temperatures rising sharply in several districts. The government said the decision is aimed at protecting children from heat-related health risks.

The minister stressed that no institution has the right to interfere with students’ holidays. Authorities have been asked to monitor schools closely and take action against any violations of the Kerala school vacation rules.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Sivankutty noted that even working hours for labourers have been revised due to the extreme heat.

Forcing children to attend classes in such conditions, he said, would amount to a violation of their fundamental and human rights.

He also warned that exposure to high temperatures could harm children’s health, especially in schools that may not be equipped to deal with such heat. The government has emphasised that student safety must come first during the summer vacation in Kerala.

Referring to earlier directions from the Child Rights Commission and court orders, the minister reiterated that children must be allowed to enjoy their holidays without disruption.

The directive applies to all institutions, including government, aided, CBSE and ICSE schools across the state.

Sivankutty added that conducting classes during the break can negatively affect students’ physical and mental well-being. He has directed education officials to ensure strict implementation of the order and take action wherever necessary.
