US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing mounting political pressure in Washington as House Democrats prepare to introduce five articles of impeachment against him, citing alleged misconduct linked to US military operations in Iran and a major security lapse known as “Signalgate.”
According to a report by Axios, the impeachment resolution- expected to be introduced on April 15- accuses Pete Hegseth of a range of serious violations, including unauthorized military action, breaches of the Law of Armed Conflict, obstruction of Congressional oversight and mishandling of classified information. The effort is being led by Yassamin Ansari, a Democrat from Arizona and the first Iranian-American elected to the US Congress. The resolution is backed by eight other Democratic lawmakers, including Steve Cohen, Jasmine Crockett, Nikema Williams, Dina Titus, David Min, Shri Thanedar, Brittany Pettersen and Sarah McBride.

Focus On Iran Military Actions
The first article of impeachment accuses Pete Hegseth of authorising US military strikes against Iran without seeking prior approval from the US Congress. Lawmakers allege that such actions not only bypassed constitutional processes but also exposed US personnel to unnecessary risks, including the potential for expanded ground operations. A second article raises concerns over civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure, claiming that Pete Hegseth “authorised, condoned, or failed to prevent” actions that may violate international humanitarian laws, including the Geneva Conventions.
‘Signalgate’ And Security Lapses
Another key charge centres on the “Signalgate” controversy, in which sensitive military discussions were allegedly exposed via a messaging platform. The scandal reportedly involved Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic, who was mistakenly added to a Signal chat discussing US strikes in Yemen. Lawmakers argue that Pete Hegseth’s handling of classified information demonstrated “gross negligence” and may have put US personnel at risk.

Additional articles accuse Pete Hegseth of obstructing Congressional oversight by failing to provide complete information on military operations, including those in Iran and other regions. He is also accused of conduct that has allegedly undermined public trust and damaged the credibility of the Pentagon.
Pentagon spokesperson dismissed the move as politically motivated, saying that the US Defense Department had successfully achieved its objectives in Iran.
