The INDI Alliance on Wednesday said it will oppose the Women’s Reservation Bill, while maintaining that it is not against reservation itself.

Leaders of the alliance took the decision after a meeting in New Delhi. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the parties have “reservations” about the manner in which the bill was introduced.

“We all are in favour of the Women’s Reservation Bill. But the way in which they have brought it, we have reservations about that. It is politically motivated,” Kharge said, adding that the move was aimed at “suppressing the Opposition parties”.

“Though we have supported the Women’s Reservation Bill continuously, we insist that the earlier amendments be implemented,” he said, adding that the parties have concerns regarding the delimitation exercise.

“They are playing some tricks over delimitation. All parties should unite and fight in Parliament. We will oppose this bill, but we are not against reservation (for women),” Kharge said.
