Actor Lena Dunham has described her Girls co-star Adam Driver as “short-tempered, verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing.” The admission came in her memoir Famesick as she discussed her experience of collaborating with the actor on the show, which was broadcast from 2012 to 2017. While the duo shared a complex on-screen relationship, that dynamic was reflected in some of the off-screen difficulties they encountered.
Dunham described the atmosphere on set as often tense and unpredictable. She recounted a particular incident during an intimate scene where she was unexpectedly caught off guard, as well as a late-night rehearsal where Driver’s reaction was notably intense.
Despite these hurdles, Dunham acknowledged Driver’s protective nature, even as she navigated the complexities of their professional relationship. She even admitted to being heartbroken after learning about his engagement.
First intimate scene left her stunned
Describing their first intimate scene, the actor recalled aiming for a cautious approach to blocking. However, Adam unexpectedly moved her around vigorously. This left Dunham momentarily speechless and uncertain about whether she had lost her directorial control or if the scene had deviated from her planned instructions.
“It wasn’t that I felt violated – and I also wouldn’t know if I had, as there was little in my sexual life that I hadn’t allowed to happen, and for no pay. But I felt that something intimate, confusing and primal had played out in a scenario I was meant to control,” she wrote.
When Adam Driver hurled a chair
Dunham recalled another incident during a late-night rehearsal for an intense fight scene. Overwhelmed by the pressures of running a show, she forgot her lines. Driver’s reaction was intense, as he screamed, “F****** say something,” and hurled a chair at the wall next to her. He then told her, “Wake the f*** up. I’m sick of watching you just stare.”
She further described Driver as being “short-tempered and verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing.” The 29-year-old actor mentioned an instance where he punched a hole in his trailer wall due to dissatisfaction with a haircut.
Another encounter involved Driver getting intimidatingly close and whispering, “Never forget that I know you. I really f****** know you,” after she apologised for an unclear slight.
Dunham often wondered if he liked her
Despite Driver’s unpredictable behaviour, Dunham often questioned whether he liked her, noting that he could be protective and caring. During a period of anxiety, Driver visited her daily.
She reflected, “But some part of me knew – some wise part of me, some bold part of me – that if we crossed whatever boundary we were threatening to cross, the return to work would be tinged with humiliation, that I’d be minimising any authority I still had, and that, however it went, my heart – bruised but improbably not yet broken – would crack.”
Dunham also revealed that she felt “heartbroken” upon learning of Driver’s engagement to Joanne Tucker. She wrote, “It was absurd to be heartbroken, to have thought I meant anything, that I occupied any role beyond distraction.”
Despite limited communication over three years, they shared emotional moments during the series finale filming in 2017. Driver told her, “I hope you know I’ll always love you,” but Dunham shares that she “never heard from him again.”
