On the 104th birth anniversary of veteran Hindi cinema lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri, his nephew Dabboo Malik shared many special memories related to him. He told that Hasrat Jaipuri was not only an excellent poet, but was also a person with extreme simplicity and affection in his personal life. His journey that started from selling toys at Chowpatty and working as a bus conductor brought him among the top lyricists of the film industry. His pairing with Shankar-Jaikishan and Raj Kapoor gave many memorable songs. Till his last breath, he had a pen and a book in his hand, which shows his passion for his work. Dabboo Malik, who took years to find out why people were giving him so much importance, says – When we were very young, we used to go to the house of uncle Hasrat Jaipuri in bad condition. His bed was adjacent to the balcony of the house, where he used to sit and write poetry. Our childhood memories are that a lot of big directors, producers and actors used to come to his house to meet him. When we were young, it was not clear why people were giving him so much respect or importance. It took us years to figure this out. Then gradually I came to know that uncle is a great lyricist. Now when I look back, I realize that oh my! This man did such a wonderful job. The most beautiful thing about him was that he was very fond of Kimam Paan and perfume. Similarly, he also had a pleasant personality. He had a large family of sisters, brothers-in-law etc. and he loved everyone very much. He took care of everyone, this was his biggest specialty. Used to think about people’s lives and remained engrossed in it. We used to think that it was very difficult to get his attention. Because, he was busy writing songs all day long. I kept crying the whole day on Jaikishan’s death. I remember his words one evening, which I never forget. That is, Jai Kishan had died. That day the song written by him was being played all over India on National Radio. That song was – ‘Geeton ka Kanhaiya is gone, now Geet mere viran hue…’, his tears were not stopping after listening to it. I don’t know, perhaps it might have been composed by Shankar-Jaikishan ji. But that moment is never forgotten. Shankar-Jaikishan duo has done a wonderful job on his songs. Uncle Hasrat Jaipuri had a pen and a book in his hand till his last breath, he loved me very much. I was their favorite because I was the youngest in the house. I got a lot of love from him. Although he was quite old at that time, he had predicted to me that there is a musician hidden within you too, you can compose songs. I said that I have not learned anything. By that time he had come to live in his bungalow in Juhu. He had a grand bungalow in Juhu. He was a very financially secure person. He and his wife took big decisions for the family. He had a very successful family in his time. They left after securing the next 10 generations. He was such a great man. But one thing I have seen is that he had a pen and a book in his hand till his last breath. The song Meri Mummy Milkis, written for his sister i.e. Meri Mummy, was the youngest sister of Hasrat Jaipuri. He loved my mother very much. He lovingly called his mother Nanhu (Chhoti). He wrote the song- ‘Suno Choti-Si Gudiya Ki Lambi Kahani…’, for my mother. It was written keeping in mind the struggle in my mother’s life. Papa had seen a lot of struggle. For them, mother was a 15-16 year old sister who got married at the age of 18. He saw his sister’s whole life. However, he did whatever he could as per his convenience. But seeing mom, he always used to say that this is his doll. He did not need to suffer through all these things, then he wrote this song. He was focused towards his work, very creative and had an amazing personality. Being so focused and absorbed towards one’s work can be learned from him. Meaning he had no diversion of any kind. He remained busy in the story of words throughout the day. He never lived a normal life. Every moment, every second, he listened only to music, lyrics, songs and faces. Had an amazing personality. He used to go to party functions only when he wanted to meet directors etc. He was a commercially successful person in his time in terms of writing. No one can see the time that he has seen during his time. So much power, so much commercial success, oh my god! Wow!! Today, if we go into the past, we will find what songs, what pictures, what work has been done. I have also heard that he used to sell toys sitting on the platform. All I have heard about him is that he came to Mumbai from Jaipur to take care of his family. Here he used to sell toys sitting on the platform. Then he got the job of a bus conductor. Then he met Prithvi Raj Kapoor as a poet in some Mushaira. Prithvi Raj Kapoor has recommended him to meet my son Raj Kapoor. The story started from there. I have never seen a person working so hard in my life. ‘Bahon Phool Barsao…’, ‘Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe…’, ‘Tum Mujhe Yun Bhula Paoge…’, ‘Ehsaas Tera Hoga Mujh Par…’, ‘Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana…’ etc. the list of my favorite songs written by him will not end. Today I think that such a great person came to this earth and left after writing such good romantic songs. I am lucky that I got a chance to embrace him, I will remain his admirer for the rest of my life. Sometimes they consider themselves lucky that they got a chance to embrace each other heart to heart. We could kiss them and they could kiss our forehead. It was our luck that we got the love of such a great man. He liked everything veg-non-veg. His sons also say that singing and food have been his favourites. He used to come home with Shankar-Jaikishan, Raj Kapoor etc. to eat food cooked by his sister i.e. my mother. My mother used to cook very good non-vegetarian food. He used to call home and ask Nando to make Shahi Kebab today. He was very proud of my mother’s cooking. He used to celebrate his birthday in a very simple way. Used to distribute food to the poor on birthdays.
