Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the suspension of Italy’s defence agreement with Israel, as the Israeli military continues its offensive in Lebanon despite mounting international pressure to halt its attacks.

“The government, in light of the situation we are experiencing, has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel,” Meloni said.

The announcement came just a day after Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani visited Beirut and publicly condemned Israel’s near-daily bombing of Lebanon as “unacceptable.” Tajani described his visit as an effort to “convey Italy’s solidarity following Israel’s unacceptable attacks against the civilian population.”

Israel-Lebanon Conflict

The Israeli offensive in Lebanon has so far killed more than 2,000 people and injured over 6,000, according to Lebanese authorities. Approximately 1.2 million people have been displaced inside the country. The situation shows little sign of easing as Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that Israel intends to occupy all Lebanese territory up to the Litani River- a strip of land stretching up to 30 kilometres from Israel’s border and comprising around ten percent of Lebanese territory- indefinitely.

Katz further stated that some 600,000 Lebanese residents will not be permitted to return to the occupied areas, and that Lebanese villages within the zone will be demolished- drawing comparisons to the near-total destruction of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has already expelled Palestinian residents and levelled much of the city.

Why Meloni’s Decision Is Significant?

Italy’s move represents a significant diplomatic escalation. Meloni had previously suspended all arms sales to Israel in 2024 over its bombardment of Gaza following the Hamas attacks of October 7. The latest action, targeting the broader defence agreement, goes a step further and signals growing frustration in Rome over Israel’s continued military operations.

Israel has so far rejected international calls for a ceasefire with Hezbollah, with officials indicating that any talks regarding Lebanon will centre on the disarmament of the militant group rather than a halt to military operations.
