Nvidia has rewarded a majority of its India-based workforce with a one-time stock grant, with payouts ranging from over Rs 5 lakh to as much as Rs 1 crore, underscoring the growing role of equity-based compensation in the country’s tech sector.
The payouts are part of the “Jensen Special Grant,” introduced in 2024 by CEO Jensen Huang. The initiative provides employees with an additional 25% of their original restricted stock units (RSUs), effectively boosting long-term compensation. Around 10,000 employees in India are estimated to have benefited from this grant, according to data cited by salary tracking platform 6figr.
The stock awards are structured to vest over four years, beginning in September 2024 and continuing in quarterly instalments through 2028. The value of these grants is linked to Nvidia’s share price and exchange rates, making payouts variable but potentially substantial over time.
For instance, in one case, a mid-level employee received additional stock units worth about Rs 5.3 lakh under the special grant, on top of regular annual equity compensation. In several roles, total unvested equity holdings can exceed Rs 1 crore, reflecting how stock-based incentives have become a key driver of wealth creation.
The move highlights a broader shift in compensation strategies among global technology firms, particularly in high-demand areas such as artificial intelligence and chip design. At Nvidia, equity can account for 50–75% of total pay, especially for mid- to senior-level engineers.
With India emerging as a critical talent hub for AI and semiconductor development, such stock-heavy pay structures are increasingly being used to attract and retain skilled professionals. Senior engineers in these domains can command annual compensation running into Rs 2–3 crore, driven largely by equity upside rather than fixed salaries.
Overall, Nvidia’s payout reflects intensifying competition for top tech talent, where long-term stock incentives are becoming as important as base pay in shaping employee earnings.
