Star Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and centre-back Cristian Romero were involved in a massive clash during the team’s match against Sunderland on Sunday, April 12, and the incident saw the latter walk off the field in tears.

Relegation-threatened Spurs were already 1-0 down after Nordi Mukiele’s deflected opener at the Stadium of Light and concern followed when Brian Brobbey appeared to nudge Romero before colliding with Kinsky while rushing back to collect a loose ball.

Sunderland full-back Noah Sadiki signalled for the medics to attend to the Spurs pair and after a lengthy stoppage, with both footballers receiving on-field treatment, Romero was left in tears as he walked off the field.

Brandon Austin had been readied as a potential substitute for Kinsky amidst concerns over the Czech goalkeeper, but he carried on with a bandage wrapped around his head.

For Romero, it marked another painful setback after being forced off with a concussion concern against Atlético Madrid last month, with fans paying tribute as he left the field emotional.

“I have a PANIC fear of Cuti Romero’s right knee,” a fan tweeted on Sunday evening.

It was the latest setback in the game after Spurs were awarded a penalty, only for VAR to overturn the decision, with Randal Kolo Muani appearing to be brought down by Omar Alderete and Luke O’Nien inside the area.

But after referee Rob Jones consulted the pitchside monitor, he overturned his on-field decision. Nordi Mukiele’s deflected strike in the 61st minute proved decisive, as Sunderland bagged a 1-0 win.

Tottenham Hotspur, now on their third manager of the season, haven’t won a Premier League match since December and are staring at the grim prospect of a first top-flight relegation since 1977.
