Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday marked 40 days since the killing of his predecessor, describing it as a grave act by enemies of Iran and Islam, as per an official statement.

“Forty days have passed since the dreadful crime of enemies of Islam & Iran, the martyrdom of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Leader of the Islamic Ummah and truth seekers, and Master of martyrs of Iran & Resistance, the Great,” he said.

The statement comes amid ongoing regional tensions, with Iranian leadership continuing to refer to the killing as “martyrdom”. The 40-day mourning period holds deep religious importance in Iran and is often observed with remembrance events and public gatherings.

Khamenei said Iran would respond strongly to recent attacks and signalled a shift in its approach to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, as per an official statement read out on state television.

“Iran will seek retribution for attacks on it, will take management of Strait of Hormuz into a new phase. Iran is resolute in taking revenge of its late Supreme Leader and its ‘martyrs’,” he said, according to Iran’s state TV.
