US VP JD Vance warns Iran Trump is not one to mess around, urges good faith talks on fragile ceasefire and Hormuz reopening, says US holds strong economic leverage over Tehran.

US-Iran War: US Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday (local time) warned Iran that President Donald Trump is “not one to mess around” if Tehran fails to engage effectively in negotiations to reach a long-term ceasefire deal.
Speaking during a visit to Hungary, Vance said that the temporary truce offers a narrow window for diplomacy but stressed that the success of the deal to ease tensions in West Asia depends on Tehran negotiating in “good faith.”
“He’s impatient to make progress,” Vance said in Budapest, referring to Trump. “If the Iranians are willing in good faith to work with us, I think we can make an agreement. That’s a big if,” he added.
Vance also said Trump had directed his team to pursue talks seriously. “The President of the United States has told me, and he’s told the entire negotiating team … go and work in good faith to come to an agreement,” he said. “That is what he has told us to do.”
At the same time, Vance issued a pointed warning. “If they refuse to negotiate, they’re going to find out that the President of the United States is not one to mess around,” he said.
While the ceasefire has held so far, Vance described it as a “fragile truce,” alleging that some Iranian officials were not acting in good faith despite positive signals from others.

Vance also underscored Washington’s leverage, saying the US retains “extraordinary economic” pressure over Iran. He claimed that Trump’s key military objective — weakening Iran’s conventional capabilities — had already been achieved.
These comments came a day after Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, on the condition that Tehran agrees to a “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz. Talks are being mediated by Pakistan.
“Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He also said Iran had shared a 10-point proposal, calling it a “workable basis on which to negotiate”.

The ceasefire appeared to be holding on Wednesday after both sides agreed to the temporary truce. However, Iranian officials signalled that a lasting agreement would depend on further negotiations.
Iran has agreed to briefly reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a move that helped ease global oil prices and triggered a relief rally in financial markets. However, major sticking points remain, including sanctions, Iran’s nuclear programme, and long-term control of the waterway.
