Puducherry goes to the polls on April 9 in a single-phase election that will decide the fate of its 30-member Legislative Assembly. In this compact Union Territory where every seat matters, five key numbers could ultimately determine which alliance or party forms the next government. Here are the five numbers that will shape the outcome on polling day:

1) 9,44,211 – Total Registered Voters

This is the exact size of Puducherry’s electorate according to the final electoral rolls. In a small 30-seat contest, even a modest shift in voter preference or turnout can swing multiple seats and change the government.

2) 16 – The Magic Majority Mark

A party or alliance needs just 16 seats to form the government in Puducherry’s 30-seat Assembly. This low threshold makes the election highly competitive — a swing of just three or four seats can prove decisive.

3) 5,00,477 – Number of Women Voters

Women form the largest voting bloc with 5,00,477 electors, outnumbering men by nearly 57,000. Accounting for over 53% of the total electorate, their choices on issues like welfare, healthcare, and local development are likely to play a crucial role.

4) 83.42% – Voter Turnout in 2021

Puducherry has a history of high voter participation. The 2021 Assembly polls recorded a turnout of 83.42%. A similarly high turnout this time could favour the side with stronger grassroots mobilisation, while a noticeable drop might benefit better-organised parties.

5) 30 – Total Seats in Play

With only 30 elected seats, there is very little margin for error. In such a small battlefield, every constituency becomes critical, and even minor surprises in a few seats can decide who crosses the majority line.

These five numbers — 9.44 lakh voters, the 16-seat majority threshold, over 5 lakh women voters, historically high turnout, and the compact 30-seat arena — will play a defining role in deciding whether the ruling NDA alliance retains power or the opposition manages a breakthrough.
