A signature boot revival, a training-ground sighting, and a match-winning return — Cristiano Ronaldo has had quite the week.

More importantly, it signals something bigger: Nike appears to be fully reigniting one of football’s most iconic partnerships ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

The Mercurial Is Back

Nike is relaunching the legendary Mercurial Superfly 1, first introduced in 2009, with Ronaldo front and centre.

Priced at $300, the timing is deliberate, with the World Cup looming this summer.

The original boot was groundbreaking, debuting Flywire cables and a carbon fibre soleplate at a time when football boot technology was undergoing a revolution.

Old Look, New Engine

This reboot keeps the classic “Max Orange/Metallic Silver” aesthetic intact while upgrading performance under the hood. The new version blends nostalgia with innovation — featuring modern Mercurial soleplate tech, Flywire lacing, and Air Zoom traction.

There’s also a personal touch: hidden inside the boot is the phrase “Made for Greatness,” printed in both English and Portuguese, a nod to Ronaldo’s legacy.

Ronaldo Stamp of Approval

Ronaldo has already been spotted training in the boots, a clear signal of their readiness for top-level action.

Significantly, this marks his first signature Nike boot since the 2022 World Cup, a gap that had raised questions about the strength of the long-standing partnership.

In the years following 2022, the visible distance between Ronaldo and Nike’s latest products sparked speculation about whether their relationship was cooling.

But this relaunch and reports of more CR7 boots on the way, including a gold colourway, suggest otherwise.

The CR7-Nike era is far from over.
