IPL Play of the Day: How Patidar allowed Tim David to unleash mayhem at Chinnaswamy

Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Chennai Super Kings by 43 runs in their IPL clash on Sunday, but the margin only scratches the surface of how the contest unfolded. This was a game shaped by decisive phases, and the most telling of them came in a brief yet commanding burst from Rajat Patidar that pushed CSK completely out of reach.

Sent in to bat, RCB constructed their innings with intent before unleashing a surge that proved impossible to contain. Devdutt Padikkal anchored the early phase with a fluent 29-ball 50, while Phil Salt added a brisk 30-ball 46 at the top. Together, they ensured that RCB had a solid platform, but it was what followed that transformed a strong total into a daunting one.

Patidar, along with Tim David, added 99 runs in just 36 balls, lifting RCB to 250 for three, the highest total of the season so far.

When Patidar arrived at the crease, RCB were well-placed but not entirely in command. Salt’s dismissal had offered CSK a small opening, and Padikkal was still settling into his rhythm. For a brief passage, the contest felt evenly poised, with CSK still in the game if they could string together a few disciplined overs.

That balance, however, did not last long. As Kevin Pietersen observed on Star Sports’ post-match show, “Virat and Phil Salt, that took a while to get going for Patidar to come out and play the way he did and just so easily just go 6,6 for me that was the turning point in the game.”

PATIDAR SHIFTS THE MOMENTUM

Patidar’s innings stood out not merely for its aggression, but for the control and clarity he brought to the middle overs. He faced 19 balls and played just two dot deliveries, a detail that underlines how relentlessly he kept the scoreboard moving. There was no phase where the pressure eased, and that constant scoring ensured that CSK were always on the back foot.

His 6 sixes and boundaries showcased his ability to dominate, but the real impact came from how he stitched the innings together. Even when boundaries were not flowing, Patidar ensured that singles were taken, strike was rotated, and bowlers were denied any opportunity to build pressure.

Pietersen also highlighted the method behind the knock, saying, “I thought that the way that he adapted to the conditions, the way that he played, the way that he got that acceleration.” It was an innings built on awareness, where Patidar read the situation accurately and adjusted his approach accordingly.

That awareness became even more evident during his partnership with Tim David. When David walked in, he was struggling at 3 off 6 balls, and CSK had a genuine opportunity to apply pressure during that phase. In many such situations, the incoming batter is forced to take risks early, but Patidar ensured that did not happen.

His calculated assault on Khaleel Ahmed in the 16th over, which yielded 18 runs, proved to be the defining moment of the innings. It shifted momentum decisively in RCB’s favour and ensured that the pressure remained firmly on CSK.

DAVID FINISHES THE DAMAGE

With Patidar dictating the tempo, David was able to ease into his innings without being forced into rash decisions. By the time he found his rhythm, the game had already tilted significantly in RCB’s favour. As Pietersen noted while reflecting on the finish, “Tim David’s innings was great. It was amazing. There were a lot of 6s,” but that late surge came with the freedom created earlier in the innings.

David went on to finish with 70 off 25 balls, launching a powerful assault in the closing overs that ensured RCB reached a near-unreachable total. His innings was destructive, but it was also made possible by the foundation Patidar had laid during that crucial middle phase.

What stood out in Patidar’s approach was his understanding of the bigger picture. As captain, he could have looked to take complete control or push for a bigger personal score, especially given the momentum. He also had the option of taking more risks to bring another power-hitter into play.

Instead, he showed restraint and awareness, pacing his innings in a way that allowed David to settle and eventually take over. That balance between aggression and control ensured that RCB maximised their scoring without losing structure.

It is no surprise, then, that Pietersen concluded, “A lot of credit needs to go to him, a lot.”

In reply, CSK were always chasing the game. Sarfaraz Khan played a composed knock of 50, while Prashant Veer contributed 43, but the required rate remained steep throughout the innings. They were eventually bowled out for 207 in 19.4 overs, falling well short of the target.

RCB’s bowlers shared the wickets, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar returning figures of 3 for 41, while Jacob Duffy, Krunal Pandya and Abhinandan Singh picked up two wickets each.

KRUNAL’S SPELL TURNS SCREW

While Patidar’s innings defined the contest, Krunal Pandya’s spell in the middle overs played a crucial role in ensuring that CSK never mounted a serious challenge. Introduced just after the powerplay, Krunal made an immediate impact by dismissing Sarfaraz Khan, who had looked like CSK’s most assured batter.

He followed it up with the wicket of Kartik Sharma in the same over, effectively halting any momentum CSK were trying to build. From there, he adapted his approach cleverly, opting for short-pitched deliveries rather than conventional lengths.

The change in tactic unsettled the batters, particularly Shivam Dube, who struggled to find any rhythm against the barrage of bouncers. It was a spell that combined awareness with execution, reinforcing RCB’s control at a critical stage of the chase.

In the end, the result read as a 43-run winbut the difference between the two sides was created through those decisive moments. Patidar’s 19-ball masterclass ensured that RCB surged ahead, while Krunal’s intervention made sure there was no way back for CSK.
