US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed in a Truth Social post that Iran has asked the United States for a ceasefire. He said Washington would consider the proposal only if the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free, and clear”.

“Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages,” Trump wrote.

Iran, however, denied making any such proposal. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said no ceasefire offer had been made and dismissed reports of a five-point plan attributed to Tehran as “media speculation”. He added that the war would continue until the “aggressor is punished” and full compensation is paid to Iran.

The ongoing Iran war began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear and leadership targets.

The opening strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and targeted key military infrastructure. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel, US military bases, and allied countries across West Asia. The conflict quickly expanded into a regional war, drawing in multiple countries and proxy groups.

The post on his social media platform came hours before his address to the American public. The White House said he would give “an important update on Iran” to the nation at 9:00 pm Wednesday (0100 GMT Thursday).

Trump also said the proposal was put forward by “Iran’s new regime president”, though it remains unclear whom he was referring to.

Masoud Pezeshkian, who was elected president of Iran in July 2024, is the country’s current president.

“Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE! We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!! President DJT,” Trump posted on Wednesday evening.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who took over as Iran’s Supreme Leader after the killing of his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in February 2026, has remained largely out of public view since assuming office. He has issued only a handful of written messages — with no verified video or audio appearances — fuelling questions about his condition and control over the war.

Trump said late on Tuesday that the fighting could be over in “two weeks, maybe three” even though Tehran was rocked by a fresh wave of explosions on Wednesday.
