There is news of increasing conflict between the government and the religious army (IRGC) in Iran. According to the Tehran Times report, there is a tussle over power between Iran’s powerful military-like organization, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and President Masoud Pazhakian.

According to the newspaper, IRGC has now taken control of the country. There is also a claim that President Pazhakian is not able to meet Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei.

In fact, earlier this week, US President Trump made a big claim regarding Iran. He said that talks are going on to end the ongoing conflict between America and Iran. According to Trump, his team is in contact with some ‘sensible’ Iranian leaders and efforts are being made to calm the situation through talks.

However, Iran immediately rejected Trump’s claim. Iranian officials clearly said that no direct talks are going on. After Trump’s claim was rejected, the question began to arise as to who has the real control in Iran.

IRCG is interfering in the President’s decisions

According to the report, Pazashkian is not able to take any major decision. IRGC, whose job was to respond to America’s attacks, is now also taking important decisions of the government.

The newspaper quoted sources as saying that Pazashkian had tried to appoint a new intelligence minister on March 26. They wanted to give this post to Hussein Dehghan, but IRGC Chief Ahmed Wahedi stopped it.

Wahedi took over the post when the previous commander, Mohammad Pakpur, was killed at the beginning of the war. Wahedi says that in case of war, only IRGC will appoint and handle all important and sensitive posts.

Generally, in Iran’s system, the President decides the name of the Intelligence Minister only after getting the approval of the Supreme Leader, because he has the final authority in matters related to security.

IRGC is tightening its grip on the system

The newspaper writes that the situation is not clear regarding who is the Supreme Leader in Iran. On the same day when the war started on 28 February, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and many big leaders were killed.

A few days later, Khamenei’s son Mujtaba Khamenei was made the supreme leader, but since then he has neither appeared nor given any direct statement. His messages are being read out only on TV.

According to the report, now a ‘Military Council’ of senior IRGC officers is taking daily decisions. Not only this, IRGC has imposed tight security around Mujtaba. Even government reports related to the situation in the country are not being allowed to reach them.

The newspaper quoted sources as saying that there has been no contact between President Pazhakyan and Khamenei in recent days. Pazhakyan tried several times to meet with the Supreme Leader, but the IRGC ignored his request.

Disagreements between the President and the IRGC were already beginning to emerge. Pazhakian was angry that the IRGC was escalating tensions by targeting neighboring countries. He warned that this would have a long-term negative impact on Iran’s economy. Iran’s economy has already weakened due to weeks of war and ammunition is also running low.

IRGC also has control over Hormuz

A power vacuum has arisen in Iran, which is why the IRGC, which works separately from the regular army, seems to be in command of the country.

The IRGC began as a paramilitary force after the 1979 revolution, but over time it became very powerful. Today it also works in big sectors like oil, transport, banking and real estate and strengthens itself with its earnings.

Now the IRGC also has control over the important oil route like Hormuz, which Iran has effectively closed. It is also not clear where Mujtaba Khamenei is. For this reason IRGC has further strengthened its hold.

Some people say that Mujtaba is dead. Some reports say that he is probably in a coma. Trump has also indicated that his condition may be serious, while US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that his face was badly affected.
