Former British Airways chief William is the new CEO of IndiGo: Will hold the post till August 3; Bhatia said – focus will be on dominating the international market

William Walsh will be the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of India’s largest airline IndiGo. Walsh currently serves as the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). His tenure will end on July 31. After this, he will take over his responsibility in IndiGo till 3 August 2026. Regulatory approval is yet to be received for his appointment.

IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said, ‘William Walsh has led many airlines. His experience in managing large-scale airline operations and understanding complex market dynamics will further strengthen IndiGo internationally. This will prove to be a new chapter in Indigo’s journey.

William has 40 years of experience in the aviation sector.

William Walsh, famous as ‘Willie’ in the aviation industry, has 40 years of experience in the aviation field. Has been the CEO of British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG). IAG is the same group that owns big brands like Irish airline Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling. Currently he is leading IATA, the organization of airlines around the world.

What will be Walsh’s main responsibility?

While assuming his new responsibility at IndiGo, William Walsh will keep an eye on the functioning and future planning of the entire airline. His biggest focus will be on 4 things.

• Operational Performance: To further improve flight operations.
• Network Extension: Expanding the scope of domestic and international routes.
• Commercial Strategy: Strengthening the company’s revenue and business model.
• Customer Experience: Making the passengers’ experience more pleasant.

Resignation of Indigo CEO Peter Elbers

The company had informed on March 10 that Peter Elbers had resigned from the post of CEO. Since then, the company’s founder and managing director Rahul Bhatia is taking charge of the functioning of the airline in the interim.

In his resignation letter to Rahul Bhatia, Peter Elbers has cited personal reasons for leaving the post. He also appealed to the company to end his notice period so that he can resign with immediate effect.

₹22 crore fine was imposed due to irregularities in flight operations

In December-2026, IndiGo had to face a huge flight operations crisis. During that time, about 3 lakh passengers were left stranded, after which aviation regulator DGCA investigated and found that the airline was negligent in passenger comfort and safety standards. After this, a penalty of ₹ 22.20 crore was imposed on Indigo. After this incident, coordination between the board and the CEO started deteriorating.

Peter Elbers was under pressure since December

Peter Elbers took command of IndiGo in September 2022. In December last year, the airline faced the worst operational crisis in its history. The airline’s reputation was badly affected due to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays. According to reports, the company had suffered a loss of around ₹2,000 crore due to this crisis. Since then there was pressure on Albers to resign.
