USA men’s football team head coach Mauricio Pochettino has said that he and his team are entirely focused on the upcoming FIFA World Cup, adding that he has had no communication with either Tottenham Hotspur or Real Madrid over coaching responsibilities.
Pochettino has been linked with both clubs in recent weeks, after Tottenham manager Igor Tudor left on Sunday, March 29, but he was emphatic in stating that there has been no contact.
Speculation was rife about a brilliant return to North London for Pochettino, six-and-a-half years after his dismissal.
“No. At the moment, no. I think we are very, very focused here in the World Cup. I think everyone knows that I am committed to the national team here. I think it is not a point to talk about the future at the moment,” Pochettino said while speaking to the media.
“I think who knows what is going to happen? As I said, we are open. We don’t have a contract for the future. But why not? If we are happy and the federation is happy and we will have to see,” Pochettino added.
But Roberto De Zerbi appears all set to be appointed as the new manager at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The team has made significant progress on a five-year deal for De Zerbi, with growing frustration over the prospect of a Pochettino return.
Tottenham may need to offer a long-term project, with concerns around Pochettino’s availability given the FIFA World Cup runs into July. The club will want to hit the ground running in pre-season, regardless of which division they are in. Pochettino built one of the finest teams the Lilywhites have seen in the modern era.
Pochettino led the N17 club to the brink of Champions League glory, with stars like Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Hugo Lloris at the core.
