Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026: Tamil Nadu’s 2026 Assembly election, scheduled for April 23, is seen as crucial for national politics. With 39 Lok Sabha seats and a large voter base, the state is a key battleground testing the BJP’s push into the south against long-standing Dravidian dominance.

A BJP breakthrough could weaken the INDIA bloc, of which the ruling DMK is a part, ahead of the 2029 general election. A DMK victory, however, would strengthen resistance to the NDA’s national ambitions.
Tamil Nadu’s 39 Lok Sabha seats – the fifth-largest share among states – make it a critical southern gateway for the BJP ahead of the 2029 polls. Even modest gains of 10-20 seats could help the NDA secure a national majority on its own.
A 2026 Assembly win could overturn the DMK’s clean sweep of 39 out of 39 seats in 2024, consolidate anti-DMK votes through an AIADMK alliance, and raise the BJP’s vote share from 11 per cent to 20-25 per cent, potentially converting into 15 or more parliamentary seats.
BJP’s southern push
Tamil Nadu remains a difficult frontier for the BJP. The party is focusing on regions such as Kongu Nadu and Kanyakumari, contesting 27 seats. A strong showing here could shift the state’s political balance and strengthen the NDA in the south. Annamalai’s campaign is positioning the BJP as an alternative to a weakened AIADMK. The party is aiming to win 15 to 20 seats through caste alliances and anti-DMK sentiment.
Language row at centre
The election is also shaping up as a key battle over language policy. It is closely linked to the debate on the three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Tamil Nadu’s long-standing two-language policy, which resists Hindi imposition, remains a major political issue. The DMK has framed the contest as a fight to protect Tamil identity, portraying the BJP’s push for “cultural federalism” as a threat. DMK leaders including MK Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin have stepped up criticism of the three-language formula.
For the BJP, Tamil Nadu offers a key opportunity to advance the NEP 2020 framework. A strong performance or victory could lead to the adoption of a flexible three-language system – Tamil, English and an optional third language such as Hindi. This would mark a shift from the state’s current two-language policy and could reshape the education landscape in Tamil Nadu.
The outcome of the election is expected to influence alliances ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. Changes in voter behaviour, especially among youth and in western Tamil Nadu, could shape political trends across the country. The results may also affect debates on federalism, including language policy and the balance of economic powers between states and the Centre.
