As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach, actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Monday launched a scathing attack on the ruling DMK, accusing it of failing to ensure public safety and tackle the drug menace.

“There is no safety for women, there is lawlessness, there is drug menace in Tamil Nadu. You all know who is responsible for this. It’s the DMK,” he said.

He added, “What did they do for the last five years? Women can’t step out of their homes at night. If you can’t provide safety for women, then why are you in power? Stalin sir is not bothered about people or their safety. Their priority is to loot the people.”

Vijay, whose TVK is making its electoral debut, is contesting his first Assembly election from two urban constituencies – Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchi East. He filed his nomination from Perambur, his mother’s birthplace and Trichy East, on Monday.

He particularly exhorted Gen Z voters to turn out in large numbers for the party’s ‘whistle’ symbol and encourage their families to back TVK candidates.

“Get ready on April 23rd, visit the booth and cast your vote for the whistle symbol. Shall we throw this govt out?” he urged.

Appealing to the electorate’s trust, Vijay said, “I have quit my career and come here to serve you and only you. I won’t cheat you. The fight this time is between DMK and TVK. Please give your brother/son one chance.”

Tamil Nadu will go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, covering a total of 234 constituencies in the State. Counting is scheduled for May 4.

Vijay will face off against the DMK’s sitting MLA RD Shekar in Perambur, and will also take on incumbent DMK MLA Inigo Irudayaraj in Trichy East.
