Baltej Singh, who runs an international drugs network under the guise of business in New Zealand, is the nephew of Satwant Singh, the assassin of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. While Baltej was living in Auckland, he used to get drugs from India, Dubai and America. Investigation revealed that he used to send drugs like methamphetamine and ephedrine to New Zealand by hiding them in coconut water cans, honey beer cans and kombucha bottles. In January 2023, when he started opening thousands of boxes by ordering them in his rented unit, the police raided him. More than 700 kg of methamphetamine was recovered from the spot and he was arrested. In 2025, the High Court of New Zealand sentenced him to 22 years. At that time he had petitioned the court to hide his identity, saying that his family could be in danger if his name was revealed. Accepting his words, the court had instructed the police, government and media not to reveal his name. But his identity had already become public in India. In 2021, he rented an industrial unit and started importing drugs in large quantities. The cans appeared normal on the outside, but some contained ephedrine (a drug used to make meth) and dissolved meth. A few months later, boxes of coconut water again arrived on an Emirates flight from Dubai. These were also sent from New Delhi and ephedrine and meth were found in them. More than a year later, in October 2022, a container ship from Toronto arrived in Tauranga. It had a 40 feet container, which contained 28,800 cans of honey beer. Another 40-foot container arrived from the US in December, containing 22,680 bottles of kombucha. In early January 2023, Singh had two trucks pick up thousands of cans of beer and bottles of kombucha and deliver them to his rented unit. There he and another person, Himatjit ‘Jimmy’ Singh Khalon, started unpacking. More than 700 kg of methamphetamine was found from this unit. When the police came to know about this, they raided this unit and found more than 700 kg of methamphetamine in liquid and crystallized form from there. Police also arrested Baltej Singh.
