Vijaypat Singhania, former MD of Raymond Group, died at 87 on Saturday in Mumbai. His son Gautam Singhania shared the unfortunate news on social media. In a post on X, he described his father as “visionary leader, philanthropist, and an inspiring personality”.

The picture shared by Gautam reads, “With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform the passing of Padma Bhushan Dr Vijaypat Kailashpat Singhania.”

Who Was Vijaypat Singhania?

Dr Vijaypat Singhania (1938–2026) will be remembered as a towering Indian industrialist who played a pivotal role in building the Raymond Group into a respected and enduring institution.

Born on 4 October 1938, he went on to lead the Raymond Group as its Chairman from 1980 to 2015, guiding it through decades of growth and transformation. His contribution to industry and the nation was recognised with an honorary PhD from the London Institute of Technology & Research, and the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2006.

Beyond the boardroom, Dr Singhania was a passionate aviator, whose love for the skies matched his drive in business. He set a record for the highest flight in a hot air balloon, a feat that reflected his courage, discipline, and spirit of adventure. This remarkable journey was immortalised in his 2005 book, “An Angel in the Cockpit: The True Story of a Death-Defying Flight Across 5000 Miles of Land and Sea,” in which he shared the story of a flight that tested the limits of endurance and human will.
