The Indian Premier League returns with its 19th season on Saturday, March 28. It has been a slow, slightly disjointed build-up to the league, coming on the back of India’s historic title defence in the T20 World Cup 2026. Multiple injuries, late arrivals, and even the Iran-Israel war have all played their part in disrupting what is usually a seamless transition into the tournament.
This was also supposed to be an 84-game season, with teams playing each other twice in a true round-robin format. But just like the Indian Cricket Board, we are going to skip that conversation and not dwell too much on why the league continues to be a 74-match affair despite promises of 10 additional games.
But before getting into cricket, it would be remiss not to remember those who lost their lives last season while attending the victory parade of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. It is hard to simply move on and talk about a new season without acknowledging that what should have been a celebration for the city ended in tragedy for several families.
Bhoomik, Sahana, Poornachandra, Prajwal, Chinmayi, Divyanshi, Shravan, Kamatchi Devi, Shivalinga, Manoj Kumar, and Akshata Pai lost their lives following a game that they loved. One can only hope that the cricketers, the fans, and the organisers have taken lessons from the incident, and that such a tragedy is never repeated in Indian sport.
Whatever the government, the organisers, and the franchise can do for those families will never truly be enough. But in an effort to ensure that this does not happen again, steps have been taken to refurbish the stadium and improve spectator safety. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, as a mark of respect, will also leave 11 seats empty going forward to commemorate those who passed away.
Against that backdrop, cricket returns to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru for the first time in nearly a year, with the league opting to skip the usual opening ceremony as a mark of respect, a small but significant decision that reflects the mood in the city.
IPL 2026: RCB vs SRH
The defending champions face the 2024 finalists SunRisers Hyderabad in the opening clash of the tournament. Matches between these two sides have tended to be high-scoring in recent years, and there is little reason to expect anything different this time around. If anything, the conditions and team combinations point even more strongly in that direction.
RCB vs SRH is shaping up to be a battle of batting units, considering both sides are currently carrying two of the thinnest fast-bowling line-ups in the league.
RCB will be without Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal, both of whom were integral to their title-winning campaign last season. SRH, on the other hand, do not have captain Pat Cummins available, with the Australian expected to join only midway through the tournament.
In those circumstances, it would not be surprising if RCB’s Virat Kohli and Phil Salt, along with SRH’s Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, go to bed already half-padded up, ready for the new ball. On what is expected to be a belter of a pitch, these line-ups have the ability to overwhelm most attacks in the competition.
Virat Kohli in Focus
A significant portion of RCB’s build-up has centred around Virat Kohli, and understandably so. With Kohli now playing just one format, the IPL becomes the primary window for fans to watch him in action.
Since the conclusion of the 2025 season, he has noticeably raised his intensity in international cricket, and RCB will be hoping that carries into the IPL as well. If he is able to replicate even a portion of that form, it gives the side a strong foundation at the top.
RCB head coach Andy Flower spoke glowingly about Kohli’s preparation in the lead-up to the season.
“Virat is in a really good space mentally. He’s very comfortable with himself but still incredibly hungry, and watching him strike the ball in training, he looks at the peak of his powers,” Flower said.
Beyond Kohli, there is a fair bit of intrigue around how RCB structure their batting. Phil Salt, Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal, Jacob Bethell, Tim David, and even Venkatesh Iyer are all in the mix. Fitting them all into one XI is not realistic, which means the early matches should offer some clarity on what the think tank is trying to build this season.
Ishan Kishan’s Test of Leadership
SunRisers Hyderabad will be led by Ishan Kishan for at least the first half of the season, a decision that came as a bit of a surprise given he has only had a short stint with the franchise. The management has overlooked more established options within the squad like Abhishek Sharma ot Nitish Kumar Reddy, and hence it comes with an element of risk.
To be fair, Ishan led Jharkhand to a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title last season, but the IPL presents a very different challenge. This opening game should offer a clearer idea of the kind of leadership and approach he brings to the side.

RCB have something of a problem of plenty in their batting unit. The key decisions revolve around players like Jacob Bethell and Venkatesh Iyer, both of whom bring quality but may struggle to find a place if the team sticks to last season’s structure.
If that template is followed, the top order is likely to feature Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, and Devdutt Padikkal, with the middle order comprising Rajat Patidar (c), Tim David, Romario Shepherd, and Krunal Pandya.
It is a line-up packed with firepower, and not an easy one to break into.
The bowling, however, is far more straightforward – largely because of a lack of options. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is expected to lead the attack alongside debutant Jacob Duffy. One of Mangesh Yadav or Rasikh Salam should slot in as the second Indian pacer, while Suyash Sharma is likely to be the lone specialist spinner.

SunRisers Hyderabad have only made one big hiring in their batting line-up at the start of the season. English all-rounder Liam Livingstone, fresh off his bust up with the England Cricket Board will be raring to prove the world wrong this season.
Usual exploits Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Nitish Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen are set to remain the mainstays.
SRH are left short in the bowling attack. Having Jaydev Unadkat as the leader of your pace attack sounds ominous, because it is. Unadkat, however brilliant he is, does not have a great track record in the IPL, and at 34 years of age it is not fair to assume that he will hit peak this season.
Unadkat will have the support of Harshal Patel, Eshan Malinga, Brydon Carse, and Harsh Dubey in the opening game, and perhaps even Nitish Kumar Reddy, who did not bowl a lot of overs last season.

The opening game of IPL 2026 between RCB and SRH will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, starting at 7:30 PM IST.
The match will be broadcast on the Star Sports Network and available for live streaming on JioStar in India.

The match will be played on the centre pitch, which has not seen competitive cricket for close to a year. That makes it slightly difficult to predict how it will behave, at least in the early stages of the game.
Traditionally, the Chinnaswamy surface has favoured batters, and that is unlikely to change drastically, although both teams may take a cautious approach early on.
The weather in Bengaluru has been hot and humid, and dew is not expected to play a significant role in the contest.
