India face Pakistan in their SAFF U20 opener with semifinal hopes on the line.

There’s no such thing as a “routine” India vs Pakistan clash, even at the U20 level.
India will kick off their SAFF U20 Championship campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on Thursday, looking to stamp early authority in a tight group stage.
With only two group matches on the schedule, there’s little room for error.
India are grouped alongside Pakistan and Bangladesh, and a single win could be enough to seal a semifinal spot.
That makes Thursday’s opener crucial.
But the equation is even more urgent for Pakistan. After suffering a 2-0 defeat to Bangladesh in their first game, they’re already in must-win territory to keep their knockout hopes alive.
Gawali Urges Calm Amid the Hype
India U20 head coach Mahesh Gawali is well aware of the occasion, but he’s keeping his players grounded.
“India versus Pakistan is always a big match, but for us, we are treating it like any other game. Every match is important for us,” Gawali said. “The focus is on starting the tournament well and making a positive beginning.”
He also issued a note of caution.
“At the same time, we need to be cautious and play with composure and discipline.”
More Than Just A Tournament
India head into the tournament as one of the favourites, and for good reason.
The Young Blue Tigers have already lifted the SAFF U20 title four times — in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2025 — underlining their dominance at this level.
Beyond regional bragging rights, the championship also serves a bigger purpose — it’s a key preparatory platform for the upcoming AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers.
