“Definitely different… but it’s going to be great.”
That is World No. 2 Jannik Sinner’s verdict on Formula 1’s much-debated 2026 regulations.
The Italian — a self-described F1 fanatic — opened up on the new era of rules that has divided the paddock and fans all over.
Sinner Backs F1’s New Era
As criticism continues to swirl around the new rules, Sinner offered a more measured take.
“Definitely different,” he told Sky Sports.
“Talking from a Ferrari perspective, we are actually close, we are second and having an Italian driver together with George, which I’m very close to, in a Mercedes, it’s good for me to watch.”
More importantly, the Italian tennis star stressed patience.
“Regulations, they are made to change the sport in a positive way, and maybe in the beginning it doesn’t seem like it, but I’m very sure it’s going to be great in the future.”
Early Concerns Still Fresh
The season-opening race at the Australian Grand Prix delivered plenty of drama and overtakes — but also raised eyebrows. Mechanical issues, multiple yellow flags and questions around energy management exposed potential flaws in the new package.
Even during pre-season testing, there were fears that the revised hybrid systems could leave cars energy-starved, impacting the overall racing spectacle.
For now, the FIA isn’t rushing into changes and is allowing teams time to adapt and gather data before making any major tweaks.
More Than Just a Casual Fan
Sinner shares a genuine passion for the sport.
“Being Italian, F1 is in my blood,” he has said previously. “I love cars, motorsport, and the thrill of racing and competing.”
That passion was on full display recently, when he celebrated fellow Italian Kimi Antonelli’s breakthrough success, calling it “amazing” to see Italy back at the top.
“It has been a special day for Italy because I am a huge Formula 1 fan, and having a very, very young Italian Kimi bringing Italy back home at the top is amazing. So thanks, Kimi and thanks Formula 1,” he said, later telling Tennis Channel he had watched highlights of 19-year-old Antonelli’s breakthrough victory.
