24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic on Sunday posted a special message for NBA legend LeBron James on his Instagram story, after the latter smashed yet another record.
James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and four-time champion, has now played the most regular-season matches in league history, going past Robert Parish.
James set the record on Saturday, March 21, during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 105-104 victory over the Orlando Magic. Djokovic shared a picture of the former and his milestone on his Instagram stories.
“LeBrongevity 🙌,” Djokovic captioned the story.
Djokovic has drawn major inspiration from James’ longevity. Speaking at the Joy Forum in Riyadh last year, the former, turning 39 this May, revealed that James, along with other elite athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo and Tom Brady, motivates him to keep competing.
“Longevity is one of my biggest motivations. I really want to see how far I can go. If you see across all the global sports, LeBron James is still going strong; he is 40. Cristiano Ronaldo and Tom Brady played until they were 40-something years old,” Djokovic said.
The Serbian tennis ace, ranked No. 3, remains one of men’s tennis’ most formidable forces despite his age. While Djokovic has struggled against the recent dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, he has reached the later rounds of the sport’s biggest events.
Meanwhile, Djokovic withdrew from the ongoing Miami Open with a right shoulder injury, organisers said on Sunday, March 15.
Djokovic made it to the fourth round at Indian Wells last week but skipped the second leg of the ‘Sunshine Double,’ where he had lost to Jakub Mensik in last year’s final.
Indian Wells marked 38-year-old Djokovic’s first tournament since he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open final.
Djokovic played with a compression sleeve on his right arm, telling Tennis Channel he was dealing with a forearm injury that was affecting his serve.
