Nifty 50, Sensex Today, Stock Market Live Updates: The Nifty50 and Sensex opened sharply lower, tracking weakness in global markets as geopolitical tensions escalated following US President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Iran.
At 9:15 AM, the Sensex was down 1,481.95 points, or 2%, at 73,051.10, while the Nifty 50 fell 467.85 points, or 2.02%, to 22,646.65.
Broader markets also came under pressure, with the Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices declining 1.90% and 2.18%, respectively.
On the sectoral front, Nifty PSU Bank was the worst performer, dropping nearly 3%. Nifty Bank and Nifty Metal indices also remained under pressure.
Global Cues
Markets across the Asia-Pacific region remained under pressure as investors reacted to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi were down 3.3% and 4.6%, respectively.
On Friday, US markets ended in the red, with the S&P 500 declining 1.51% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 0.96%.
Crude oil prices edged higher after US President Donald Trump warned of potential action against Iran’s nuclear facilities if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened within 48 hours. In response, Iran threatened strikes on energy infrastructure across the Middle East.
Brent crude for May delivery was up 0.66% at $107.11 per barrel.
Meanwhile, gold futures dropped 3.34% as the ongoing US-Iran tensions weighed on inflation expectations and the outlook for borrowing costs.
