Even as the Strait of Hormuz remains shut for many countries, two Indian-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers are preparing to sail through the key route in the coming days.

According to the report, two Indian LPG carriers – Pine Gas and Jag Vasant – are currently positioned near Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

Ship-tracking data from MarineTraffic showed that both vessels are signalling readiness for departure. A trade source familiar with the situation said the tankers could set sail as early as Saturday, though there is no official confirmation yet.

India’s foreign ministry has adopted a cautious stance, stressing the need for safe passage of its vessels in the region. “We are in favour of safe and unhindered movement” of India’s 22 ships currently in the Gulf, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday. He added that PM Narendra Modi is in contact with global leaders to ensure their safety.

Jag Vasant has been chartered by BPCL, while Pine Gas is operated by IOC.

Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz on March 2, disrupting a vital global energy route. Tehran has warned it could target vessels attempting to leave the Gulf. Nearly 20 per cent of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass through this narrow passage.

However, Iran allowed two Indian-flagged LPG carriers to cross last week.
