US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Friday highlighted the strong personal equation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump and said that they were the “only two dealmakers” in finalising the India-US trade deal.

Addressing a session at the India Today conclave, Gor credited the two leaders for the historic India-US trade agreement and said, “The only two dealmakers were President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. Their deep and personal friendship got the deal done.”

In a major decision last month, Trump, while announcing the trade deal, claimed that India has agreed not to procure crude oil from Russia. Following this, he rolled back an additional 25 percent tariffs imposed on New Delhi last August in an executive order.

Last week, however, in view of the ongoing shortage in global oil demands amid Iran war, the United States issued a temporary 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil.

“To enable oil to keep flowing into the global market, the Treasury Department is issuing a temporary 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.

While announcing the decision, Bessent said that the waiver is a short-term measure and will not provide significant financial benefit to the Russian government.

He described the move as a stopgap measure, adding that Washington expects India to eventually increase purchases of US crude.

‘India Vital Partner To Ensure Stable Oil Prices’: Gor

Raising concerns over the situation at the Strait of Hormuz, Gor said that the situation in West Asia can disrupt the energy supplies as the conflict escalates. He further acknowledged that India plays a “vital role” in keeping oil prices stable around the world.

“Today we’re in a situation where, unfortunately, Iran is trying to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranians are recklessly targeting commercial vessels, including Indians who have unfortunately lost their lives through Iranian missiles and drones in the last few days, as recently as yesterday. And so it’s we’re frankly in a different environment. And so today India understands this. India’s a vital partner to us to ensure that these prices remain stable around the world,” the US Ambassador said.
