On Women’s Day, when we talk about the achievements and contributions of women, the name of Dr. Bharti Kashyap of Jharkhand also comes up. Dr. Kashyap, who runs a village-to-village campaign to save eyesight, has so far provided free treatment to about 20 lakh poor children. Not only this, she is also running a big campaign against cervical cancer, which has given new hope for awareness and treatment to millions of women.
About three decades ago, Dr. Bharti Kashyap entered the field of medicine. He decided that Jharkhand Health services have to be provided to those areas where even today the reach of doctors is very less. Especially in tribal dominated areas, he started working for eye patients.
From the dense forests of Saranda to the villages of Santal Pargana and from Kolhan to Palamu division… Dr. Kashyap reached people many times even at her own expense. Sometimes we got government support and sometimes social organizations supported us. But his journey never stopped.
Made people aware about eye donation
The suffering of people who have lost their eyesight inspired him to spread awareness about eye donation. He went from village to village and explained to the people that eye donation can bring new light in someone’s life.
Gradually his campaign became a movement. People started coming forward to donate eyes and thousands of people started getting new light. Started eye donation and eye transplantation in Bihar and Jharkhand region.
‘Lives of lakhs of children changed through ‘Mobile Vision Centre’
Dr. Kashyap felt that it was very important to provide eye check-up and treatment to poor children. With this thinking in mind, he started the ‘Mobile Vision Center’ model. Under this initiative, a team of doctors goes from village to village to examine the eyes of children and also provide free treatment if needed. So far, about 20 lakh poor children have been provided free treatment through this model. This initiative has proved to be a boon for those areas where it is still not easy to reach hospitals.
Big campaign launched against cancer also
Dr. Bharti Kashyap also started a comprehensive campaign against a serious issue related to women’s health – cervical cancer.
In Jharkhand, under the Jharkhand Model prepared under his leadership, women are being examined from village to village. Till now, more than 5 lakh 40 thousand women have been examined and the needy have also been treated.
This initiative has proved to be extremely important especially for rural and tribal women, as the disease is often detected late due to lack of awareness. Dr. Bharti Kashyap has been in service for the last 32 years.
Got recognition at national level also
Dr. Kashyap has been honored with the National Nari Shakti Award 2017 for her contribution in the field of women and child empowerment. This honor was given to him by the President of the country.
Apart from this, in the year 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited her in a tea discussion program on International Women’s Day, including her among the six inspirational women of the country.
Dr. Bharti Kashyap has also been given a record six prestigious awards by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for her excellent work. These include Made Achievers Award, Doctor of the Year Award, Jyoti Prasad Ganguly Award, Kanak Goyal Award, National President’s Appreciation Award and Dr. A.K.N. Sinha Awards.
Today many big health campaigns are going on in Jharkhand under the leadership of Dr. Kashyap. These include vision protection campaign, eye donation awareness campaign, diabetic retinopathy screening and Jyot Se Jyot Jalao programme.
