Actually, Ajit Pawar died in a plane crash in Baramati on 28 January. With his departure, the post of Deputy CM in Maharashtra has become vacant. Ajit held the portfolios of Finance, Excise and Sports as well as the post of Deputy Chief Minister. According to sources, the Finance Ministry may remain with CM Fadnavis.

It is also being claimed that Sharad Pawar will take the final decision on the merger on which Ajit Pawar was talking between the two factions of NCP.

Round of meetings continued throughout the day from Amravati to Mumbai

11 am: NCP leaders reached Fadnavis’ house Varsha Bungalow in Mumbai on Friday morning to meet him with the demand of Deputy CM and departments. These included Praful Patel, Chhagan Bhujbal and Sunil Tatkare. The meeting lasted for half an hour. at 6 pm: Ajit’s wife Sunetra Pawar called Naresh Arora to Baramati for political advice. Naresh is Ajit Pawar’s election strategist. His organization ‘Designbox’ works for NCP. 8 pm: When Naresh Arora left for Mumbai, news came that Sunetra had agreed to become Deputy CM. However, considering the budget in the state, he will not be given the finance department at present. 8:30 pm: CM Fadnavis said, whatever decision has to be taken, NCP will take it. Be it Pawar family or party, we stand firmly with them. NCP leaders have talked to me twice about this.

Claims of 3 people regarding NCP merger

Kiran Gujar, close to Ajit, told news agency PTI that he was 100% eager to merge the two factions. He had said five days ago that the process was complete and the merger was going to happen in the next few days. Gujar said Ajit had a roadmap ready for the future of the merger and a united NCP.

Senior NCP leader Jayant Patil has also said that several meetings had taken place between Ajit Dada and him regarding the merger. Ajit was positive about it. The final decision on this was to be taken after the Zilla Parishad elections. Ajit Dada had said that first the local body elections should be fought in alliance, the decision on merger will be taken after the elections.

NCP Sharad faction leader Eknath Khadse has told news agency ANI that both the factions of NCP will come together. The merger had been finalized.

What will happen if NCP merges?

NCP (SP) sources told news agency PTI that before the plane crash on Wednesday, both sides of the NCP had reached the advanced stage of talks. The plan was to announce the merger immediately after the end of the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections.

Ajit’s strategy was to take stock of the atmosphere during the local body elections and strengthen the vote banks of both the parties before announcing a complete merger.

Sources say that the merger will bring a fundamental change in the mathematics of the cabinet. If the merger happens, NCP (SP) leaders will play a key role in the governance and party organization of the state.

The merger is being seen as a strategy to recapture the sugar bowl of western Maharashtra, where the BJP has made significant inroads in the recent municipal elections.

After the merger, the NCP will have a strong combination of 9 Lok Sabha MPs and 51 MLAs, which could potentially change the balance within the ruling Mahayuti alliance or the opposition Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA).

CM Fadnavis can present the budget in place of Ajit

After the death of Ajit, it is now almost certain that the Finance Department of Maharashtra will currently remain with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the CM will present the budget of Maharashtra in March. When Eknath Shinde was the Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, as Deputy Chief Minister, held the important portfolios of both Home and Finance. Fadnavis also presented the Maharashtra state budget on 9 March 2023.

When Ajit Pawar joined the grand alliance government in July 2023, Fadnavis handed over the Finance Ministry to Ajit Pawar. He was scheduled to present the state budget on 23 February. In Fadnavis’s first term (2014-2019), the finance ministry was with Sudhir Mungantiwar.

Sudhir Mungantiwar is only an MLA but is not a part of the Fadnavis government. The chances of him becoming a minister and getting the finance ministry again are very less.

NCP broke in July 2023

Sharad Pawar formed the Nationalist Congress Party in 1999. In July 2023, Ajit Pawar joined the grand alliance government led by Eknath Shinde. After this NCP was divided into two parts. At that time he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister. Pawar continued in the same post even after Devendra Fadnavis became the Chief Minister after the November 2024 assembly elections.

There was a tough fight between the two factions over the claim on the (NCP’s) party name and election symbol, with Ajit Pawar’s faction getting the original NCP name and the analog alarm clock election symbol. Currently, the NCP is part of the Mahayuti government, while the NCP (SP) is part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
