The European Union (EU) has approved the new defense agreement (Security and Defense Agreement) with India. It will be signed at the India-EU summit to be held in New Delhi next week. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas gave this information in the European Parliament on Wednesday. He said this partnership will be part of a larger strategic agenda. This agenda includes Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Defense and Security Deal, Cyber Security, Maritime Security and Counter Terrorism. European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are visiting India. He will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on 26 January. The India-EU summit will take place the next day on January 27. Kallas said – the agreement will be helpful in combating terrorism. Kallas said that the Security and Defense Agreement will increase cooperation between India and EU in areas like maritime security, counter terrorism and cyber defense. He said that Europe is ready to move forward on a new and stronger agenda with India. The EU delegation coming to India will include around 90 members. These will include Kaja Kallas, Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and many directors. How will the free trade agreement be signed? To sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), both countries will first complete the legal processes. First the European Parliament has to say yes. After the approval of the European Council, Trade Commissioner Sefcovic will present it to India for signing. During the summit, India and the EU will also present a political agenda till 2030. According to media reports, both the countries are currently talking to reach a consensus on controversial issues like Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Under CBAM, there are rules made for carbon tariffs on products like steel and cement. If a country produces goods by polluting a lot. Then it is brought to Europe, then Europe imposes additional tax on it. The EU has not made any changes regarding this policy yet. Both countries are trying to find a solution to this. EU-India coming together is beneficial Kallas has said that working together in today’s dangerous world will be beneficial for both. Free trade agreement will open the market, which will reduce taxes and barriers on the goods of the countries. Because of this, more companies and traders can sell and buy goods in each other’s country. Due to which exports will also increase. Apart from this, cooperation in clean technology, medicine and semiconductor will also help. Mobility of jobs and professionals is the third part of this new agenda. Kallas said that both the countries will also sign an agreement to ease the movement of seasonal workers, students, researchers and skilled workers. This will increase cooperation in technology and research.
