30-year-old Bangladeshi national Bilkis Begum Sirmiya Akhtar was arrested in the Cuffe Parade area of Mumbai.
Mumbai Police have arrested two Bangladeshi women who allegedly re-entered India after being deported in August last year. In the first case, a 38-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday at the Gateway of India. A case was registered against her under the Foreigners Act.
Deported in August, returned via India-Bangladesh forest route
The woman identified herself as Zulekha Jamal Sheikh. Police said she was living on a footpath in the Kamathipura area. During questioning, Sheikh claimed she was deported in August and handed over to Bangladeshi authorities, but later crossed back into India through forests along the India-Bangladesh border. She failed to produce any valid travel documents.
Police said Sheikh originally hails from Bangladesh’s Jashore district. Police are now trying to find out who helped her cross the border and whether an organised network was involved.
Second arrest in Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade
In a separate case, 30-year-old Bilkis Begum Sirmiya Akhtar was arrested for illegally entering India and living in Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade area. Police said she initially avoided giving clear answers, but her identity was later confirmed with the help of an informant.
During interrogation, Akhtar admitted she had been deported in August but returned illegally. A raid at her residence led to the recovery of a mobile phone containing a Bangladeshi national ID and photographs. An FIR was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Foreigners Act.
