The stock market will remain closed on 15 January. NSE and BSE have announced that trading in the capital markets segment will remain closed on Thursday, January 15, 2026, due to the municipal corporation elections (civic polls) to be held in Maharashtra.

This decision has come after the public holiday declared by the Maharashtra government, in which voting is taking place in 29 municipal corporations. In which Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also included.

Earlier there was settlement holiday, now full trading holiday

NSE had earlier said in a circular that the markets will remain open, but there will be no T+0 settlement. But later in a partial amendment, NSE said that there will be a trading holiday in the Capital Market (CM) segment on January 15.

This means that trading in equity, equity derivatives, Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives and interest rate derivatives will not be possible. Morning session will also remain closed in commodity derivatives.

Maharashtra government notification

The Maharashtra government has declared January 15 as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. This holiday is to ensure smooth conduct of elections in 29 municipal corporations, which include Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban (BMC).

BMC’s press release said that government offices, public sector units, banks and other institutions will remain closed in Mumbai city and eastern-western suburbs.

Voting and result schedule

  • Voting date: 15 January 2026 (7:30 am to 5:30 pm)
  • Counting: 16 January 2026

These elections are being held after 2017, when the last civic polls were held and the markets were closed. This time more than 1 crore voters will participate.

What is the impact on traders?

  • Settlement of trades that took place on January 14 and 15 will take place on January 16.
  • You will not be able to sell MTF or BTST positions on the 15th.
  • Trading holiday in debt and currency segments also.
  • Due to complete ban in equities, traders will have to plan.
