Gobind Chandra Pramanik has accused Khaleda Zia’s party BNP of conspiring against him.
A Hindu leader has been barred from contesting elections in Bangladesh. Elections are going to be held in Bangladesh on 12 February. Gobind Chandra Pramanik had filed nomination for parliamentary elections from Gopalganj-3 seat, but the returning officer on Saturday returned his nomination.
Former PM Sheikh Hasina was MP from Gopalganj-3. There are more than 50% Hindu voters here. Gobind wanted to contest the elections as an independent. He is a lawyer by profession and is also the general secretary of an organization called Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajot (BJHM). BJHM is a Hindutva alliance of a total of 23 organizations. BJHM is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Serious allegations made against Khaleda Zia’s party
According to media reports, Gobind said that there is a provision in Bangladesh according to which an independent candidate has to bring the signatures of 1% of the voters of his area.
Following the rules, he had brought the signatures of 1% of the voters, but later those voters came to the Returning Officer and told that their signatures had not been taken.
Gobind alleges that Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) workers pressured voters to do so. After this the Returning Officer declared all the signatures invalid and canceled the nomination.
51% voters on Pramanik’s seat were Hindus.
Gobind has claimed that he wanted to contest the elections as an independent because he was confident of his victory. He says that out of 3 lakh voters of Gopalganj, 51% are Hindus.
BNP removed him because there was absolutely no chance of him winning here. He said, I will complain about this to the Election Commission. If I don’t get justice, I will also go to court.
According to the report of Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star, Gobind had filed his election nomination on December 28. Gobind had then said that neither he has any connection with any political party nor has he ever been active in politics.

BJHM runs 350+ Vedic schools in Bangladesh
Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mahajot (BJHM) is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangathan and propagates the ideology of Hindutva in Bangladesh. This organization runs more than 350 Vedic schools in different areas of Bangladesh, where children are taught many Hindu scriptures including the Bhagavad Gita.
Gobind Chandra Pramanik is the general secretary of BJHM. Regarding Vedic schools, Gobind had said in 2023 that ‘Our aim is to inculcate a sense of Hindu pride in children right from childhood so that our religion can be promoted and protected. Hinduism is currently facing an existential crisis in Bangladesh.

Election nomination of another Hindu candidate withdrawn
Like Gobind Chandra Pramanik, the nomination of another Hindu candidate, Dulal Biswas, has also been returned. Dulal was given the ticket by Gono Forum, a registered political party. Therefore, the rule of signature of 1% voters did not apply to him, but his nomination was returned citing lack of documents. Now they are going to submit the documents afresh.
Another independent Hindu candidate Utpal Biswas is contesting from Gopalganj 2 seat. Hasina’s cousin Sheikh Salim once contested elections from this seat. Biswas says, ‘I work among farmers and the underprivileged. I hope they will vote for me.
Elections 18 months after Hasina’s government fell
Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh fell on 5 August 2024 following a student agitation, after which she resigned and fled to India. On August 8, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
The interim government promised to hold elections in Bangladesh within 6 months. However, the deadline was later extended and now the general elections are scheduled to be held on 12 February 2026.
Khaleda Zia’s party is the most powerful
After Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s party BNP is being called the biggest party of Bangladesh. On December 30, Khaleda Zia died due to prolonged illness.
Now the command of BNP is in the hands of Khaleda’s son Tariq Rehman. Tariq returned to Bangladesh on December 25 after 17 years in exile. He was welcomed by around 1 lakh BNP workers at Dhaka airport.
Rehman filed nomination from Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 seats on December 29. Bogura-6 has been the traditional seat of Rehman’s mother Khaleda Zia. According to media reports, Tariq Rehman may be BNP’s prime ministerial candidate.
4 Hindus murdered in Bangladesh within 15 days
After the death of anti-India leader Usman Hadi on December 18, Islamic organizations in Bangladesh started targeting Hindu minorities. 4 Hindus have been murdered in Bangladesh within 15 days. After the murder of Dipu Chandra on false charges of blasphemy on December 18, 29 year old Amrit Mandal alias Samrat was beaten to death by the mob on December 24.
After this, on December 29, 42-year-old textile factory employee Bajendra Biswas was shot dead in Mymensingh district. During this period, the mob also set fire to the houses of many Hindus.
