In fact, on January 2, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi had expressed concern over the misuse of AI chatbot Grok. He had written a letter to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav.
It was said that some people are changing the real pictures of women into objectionable forms with the help of AI, which is a very serious matter.
Earlier on December 29, MeitY had warned all social media platforms that legal action would be taken if they did not take strict action against obscene and illegal content.
Women’s pictures changed into obscene pictures
Actually, some users create fake accounts on social media platform X. From these accounts they post pictures of women. After this, Grok AI is given a prompt to show the photos of women in an incorrect and objectionable form.
AI is given prompts like changing clothes or presenting the picture in a sexual manner. No permission is taken from women for these photographs. Many times the women themselves do not even know that their photographs are being used in this way. The allegation is that Grok accepts such wrong demands instead of stopping them.
Some users create obscene photos of women by giving such prompts on Grok.
With the help of these prompts, obscene content is created on Grok.
What did the government say in the order?
The ministry says that X did not comply with the legal responsibilities prescribed under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and IT Rules 2021. If the rules are not followed, then strict action can be taken against X, its responsible officers and the users spreading such content under the IT Act, IT Rules and other applicable laws.
Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote in the letter-
- The Grok feature of AI is being misused on social media, especially on X. Some men are creating fake accounts and posting pictures of women and asking AI to make clothes appear smaller or misrepresent the pictures.
- This is not limited to just fake accounts, but women who share their own photos are also being targeted. This is very wrong and a serious misuse of AI.
- The most worrying thing is that Grok is accepting such wrong demand. Due to this, the privacy of women is being violated and their photographs are being used without permission. This is not only wrong, but a crime.
- India cannot silently watch as women’s dignity is publicly and digitally harmed in the name of technology and innovation. Such incidents are continuously increasing on big tech platforms, which are a matter of concern.
- The country cannot ignore such digital crimes against the honor of women. Similar incidents are happening on other big tech platforms too, where there is no restriction.
- India supports AI and its benefits, but content that insults and targets women will not be tolerated at all.
Danger of losing legal protection if orders are not followed
According to the IT Act, if any obscene, objectionable, anti-women or illegal content is posted on X, then the platform has to remove it immediately as soon as it gets information about it. If the central government or court asks X to remove any content or block the account, then it is legally necessary to obey it.
If After this, only X users will be held responsible for illegal content.
At the same time, there can be a criminal case against the company, fine, FIR against the responsible officials and investigation by the investigating agencies. Under Section 69A of the IT Act, the government can block any specific account of X, any content or some features of the entire platform in India.
