Vinesh Phogat was scheduled to play the final on August 8 but was disqualified due to being 100 grams overweight.
Vinesh Phogat will not get the silver medal in the Paris Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) rejected her appeal on Wednesday, 14 August. Phogat was disqualified before the final for being overweight. After this she had appealed to CAS.
The decision on the appeal was to be taken on August 16, but his appeal was rejected on August 14 itself. After the decision, Indian Olympic Committee President PT Usha expressed displeasure.
Vinesh had made it to the finals by winning 3 consecutive matches in the 50 kg women’s category of wrestling. The final was to be held on 8 August, but before the match, the Olympic Committee disqualified the wrestler because Vinesh’s weight was 100 grams more than 50 kg.

PT Usha expressed displeasure
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed her displeasure over the CAS result. She said that she was shocked by the decision of the United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The decision on Vinesh’s silver medal was postponed on August 13
After Vinesh’s appeal, CAS held a 3-hour hearing on August 9. Vinesh was also present virtually during this time. Senior advocate Harish Salve represented Vinesh on behalf of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Before the final match, Vinesh was disqualified due to being 100 grams overweight, while in the weigh-in done before the preliminary round, Vinesh was below the prescribed limit of 50 kg weight category. In such a situation, Vinesh had demanded a joint silver medal.

Vinesh Phogat is likely to return to India on August 17.
These arguments were put forward in favor of Vinesh
- 100 grams of weight is very small. It is not more than 0.1% to 0.2% of the athlete’s weight. Weight can also increase easily in summer due to the swelling of the human body. Due to the need of human survival, more water is stored in the body, due to which this much weight can increase at any time.
- Vinesh had to fight 3 competitions in a single day. During this time, she also had to eat to maintain her energy. In such a situation, her weight had reached 52.7 kg.
- Due to the distance between the Games Village and the Olympic Games arena and the continuous matches on the first day, Vinesh did not get enough time to lose weight.

2 important statements on Vinesh’s case…
- PT Usha- Managing weight is the responsibility of the player and the coach Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha said, ‘It is the responsibility of the player and the coach to manage weight. Especially in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo. In these, the responsibility of weight management of the athletes lies with each athlete and his coach, not with the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team.’
- Thomas Bach – We will accept the court’s decision In Vinesh’s case, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said, ‘No, if you are asking about giving two silver medals in a category in general. I think the rule of the International Federation should be followed. The decision of weight cut was of United World Wrestling. If we allow with 100 grams then why not with 102 grams. Now this matter is in court. Now we will follow the decision of CAS. Still the federation has to implement its rules. It is their responsibility.’
Vinesh retires on the second day of medal appeal
