From February 1, 2026, KYV (Know Your Vehicle) process will no longer be required while issuing Fastag for new cars, jeeps and vans. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to stop the KYV process for new cars.

Also, the owners of cars which already have Fastag will no longer need to get routine KYV done. With this, vehicle owners will not have to wait for the long verification process despite having valid documents.

The purpose of this step of the government is to eliminate the problems faced after Fastag is activated. Earlier, users often complained that even after the tag is activated, there is delay in the name of verification by the bank or authority. After the new guidelines, the need to update Fastag again and again will go away.

Investigation will be done only after receiving complaint

According to the authority, the KYV process has not been completely abolished, but has been made ‘need based’. Now KYV will be sought only when any complaint is received regarding misuse of Fastag, wrong issuance or its getting loose. Now no documents will be demanded again for Fastag which is working normally.

Will verify directly from bank vehicle portal

NHAI has also changed the rules for banks issuing Fastag. Now, before activating Fastag, it will be mandatory for banks to do pre-activation validation of the vehicle through the database of the vehicle portal.

This means that the banks themselves will verify the vehicle information with government data, so that the customer does not have to visit offices later. This digital automation will make the process more transparent and faster.

Time will be saved in paying toll

An NHAI official said that this reform has been brought to save time of common road users. It has often been seen that despite having valid vehicle documents, users had to face problems at toll plazas or during payment due to post-issue KYV. After this change, the toll payment experience will become more ‘seamless’.
