Ayoub El Kaabi struck twice as hosts Morocco powered into the Africa Cup of Nations last 16 with a commanding 3-0 win over Zambia in Rabat on Monday night, sealing top spot in Group A.
Roared on by 62,532 fans at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the Olympiakos striker scored once in each half to underline Morocco’s growing momentum. At the same time, Brahim Diaz continued his red-hot form with a goal for the third straight match at the tournament.
El Kaabi once again stole the show with another absolute banger of a bicycle kick — his second of the tournament so far.
The result leaves Walid Regragui’s side unbeaten after the group stage, finishing with seven points from two wins and a draw. Mali took second place following a third successive stalemate — a goalless draw with Comoros despite finishing with 10 men — while Zambia bowed out.
As group winners, Morocco earn the added advantage of staying in Rabat for their last-16 clash on Sunday, January 4, against one of the best third-placed finishers.
“I think the competition really begins now,” Regragui said.
“The objective was to qualify in the best possible shape. Now we dream of going as far as possible.”
The night also brought a welcome boost as Achraf Hakimi, Africa’s reigning Player of the Year, made his first appearance since November, coming on in the second half after recovering from an ankle injury.
For Zambia, the task was always steep. Needing a win to progress, the Copper Bullets — AFCON champions in 2012 — were unable to halt a Moroccan side that had already beaten them home and away in World Cup qualifying.
