An explosion struck the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque in the central Syrian city of Homs, killing at least three people and wounding several others, according to Syrian state media. The blast occurred inside the mosque in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood, a government-controlled district of the city, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.
Emergency response teams were dispatched immediately to the site to evacuate the wounded and secure the area. Security forces cordoned off the perimeter of the mosque as investigators began examining the scene.
Authorities said the nature and cause of the explosion had not yet been determined. It remained unclear whether the blast was caused by an explosive device, a suicide attack or another source.
AFP reported that the mosque is located in an Alawite-majority area of Homs.
