BrahMos is one of the most lethal and fastest missiles in the world. It attacks at Mach 3.0 speed using fire-and-forget technology.

India’s supersonic BrahMos cruise missile, which came into international limelight by destroying 6 airbases of Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, is now going to become even more powerful. According to defense sources, the range, speed and firepower of BrahMos is being further improved.

At present its range is around 300 kilometers, but work is going on to increase it from 450 kilometers to 800 kilometers in the new version. After the arrival of these new missiles, Pakistan’s capital Islamabad can be targeted from Delhi itself. The air distance between Delhi and Islamabad is 700 kilometers.

At the same time, a lighter version of BrahMos is also being made. A special version of BrahMos weighing about two and a half tonnes has been prepared to be installed under the underbelly of the Sukhoi MKI-30 fighter aircraft. This version has now reached the next stage after approval from the Project Design Board.

Currently, preparations are underway for ground trials of the longer range BrahMos missile. This new version is expected to be fully developed in the next three years. If everything goes according to plan, the first test of this new version of BrahMos can be conducted by the end of 2027.

Preparations going on since 2016, now 3 range avatars

BrahMos is counted among the world’s fastest and deadliest cruise missiles. It works on “fire and forget” technology and attacks the target at the speed of Mach-3. Due to its fast speed, enemy radars are not able to catch it in time.

In 2016, BrahMos became a member of the Aerospace Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). This regime includes 35 countries. Only after this, work started on increasing the range of BrahMos beyond 300 km.

Actually, under the rules of MTCR, missile technology with a range of more than 300 km cannot be given to non-member countries, so earlier the range of BrahMos was limited. Now after Operation Sindoor, work on 3 new versions of BrahMos has been expedited.

There are plans to increase their range to 450, 600 and 800 km. A lighter version of BrahMos is also being prepared for the Air Force. The weight of BrahMos, which can be fired from land and sea, is about 3 tonnes, which is being reduced to about two and a half tonnes for the Air Force.

Meanwhile, India successfully test-fired nuclear capable K-4 ballistic missile in the Bay of Bengal. Defense sources said the missile was launched from the nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighat. Its range is 3500 km.

Media reports said that this test was conducted near Visakhapatnam coast on Tuesday. After land and air, India will now be able to launch nuclear weapons from the sea also. This missile is capable of carrying up to 2 tons of nuclear warhead.

The letter “K” in the K-series missiles is named in honor of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He has played an important role in India’s missile program.
