Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister on August 5. She left the country and came to India.
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday issued a statement for the first time after leaving the country. She said, ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujiburahman, under whose leadership the country achieved independence, has been insulted.’
‘They (protesters) have insulted my father, I demand justice from the people of the country.’ Sheikh Hasina left the country on 5 August and came to India, since then she is here. This statement of Sheikh Hasina has come from her son Sajeeb Wazed. He posted it on social media.
Sheikh Hasina urged Bangladeshi citizens to mourn the death anniversary of her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August. Mujibur Rahman was shot dead on 15 August 1975. On the other hand, the interim government of Bangladesh has cancelled the holiday on 15 August.
Hasina paid tribute to those killed in the protests
“Since July till now, many lives have been lost in vandalism, arson and violence in the name of the movement. I pray for the peace of their souls and offer my condolences to them. My sympathies are with all those who, like me, are living with the pain of losing their loved ones,” Hasina said in the statement.
Several students, teachers, policemen, journalists, Awami League leaders and social activists were killed in the protests. “I demand that those involved in these killings and brutality be given the strictest punishment,” Hasina said.

Violent protests against reservation had started in Bangladesh since June 5
Hasina had said- America is asking for St. Martin Island from Bangladesh
Earlier also a claim was made regarding Hasina’s statement. According to this claim, Hasina had said that her government was toppled because she did not give St. Martin Island to America. According to the Economic Times, Hasina told her close aides, “I did not want to let the death toll in the violence of fundamentalists increase.”
“They wanted to gain power through the dead bodies of students. But I did not let this happen by resigning from my post.”
Earlier in June 2021, Bangla newspapers claimed that the US is demanding St. Martin Island from Bangladesh. It wants to build a military base here. After this, Bangladesh Workers Party President Rashid Khan Menon also said in Parliament that the US wants to acquire St. Martin Island and is pressuring it to become a member of the Quad.
The island of St. Martin, which has caused so much uproar in Bangladesh politics, is an island of just 3 square km. In June 2023, PM Hasina had said that if the opposition BNP party came to power, they would sell St. Martin.

St. Martin’s Island of Bangladesh is strategically important, its distance from Myanmar is only 8 km.
Sheikh Hasina had come to India after resigning
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post on August 5 after a two-month-long anti-reservation student movement. After this, she left the country and reached India from Dhaka via Agartala. Her C-130 transport aircraft landed at Ghaziabad’s Hindon airbase at 6 pm.
There were reports of her going to London or some other country from here. However, due to not getting permission from Britain or any other country, Hasina is currently staying in India. After reaching the airbase, Sheikh Hasina talked to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval for about an hour.
After Hasina left the country, an interim government has been formed in Bangladesh. Nobel Mohammad Yunus has been appointed as the chief advisor of the interim government.
