Tharoor made the comparison in his statement and said that if the match had been held in Thiruvananthapuram, the situation would have been different. He told that at that time the AQI in Thiruvananthapuram was around 68, which comes in the safe category. According to him, organizing sports events would have been easier and safer in better air and clean environment.
Lucknow AQI was recorded above 300, which is kept in very serious category. In such bad air, visibility reduces, which affects both the safety of the players and the fairness of the game. This was the reason why the start of the match was not possible and the spectators had to face disappointment.
Tharoor’s statement is not limited to just one match, rather it points towards the ever increasing pollution in North India. He also indirectly raised the question as to how big sports events are planned when the air quality is so bad.
